"You SOB I'm going to..." Daryl reaches out to punch Shane as he insulted the group for continuing to search for Sophia while she was in the barn, a zombie, but was held back by another group member. "You'll be sorry....." he pushed back.
"Yeah, well you go ahead and try." Shane yelled back pointing fearcly in Daryl's direction.
"Both of you stop..." Lori grabbed Shanes arm.
"Don't touch me..." Shane stormed off.
"That's right freak, run I ain't scared of you...prick" Daryl concluded and stormed off to his campsite mumbling obscenities to himself. "I'm done with this crap! Nobody better ask me to help anymore I'm done helping" he yelled "To hell wit all y'all!" He packed up his camp and moved it out farther away from the group. After setting up camp Daryl sat peacefully by the fire and began to work on shaving new arrows when he heard footsteps. Startled he picked up his crossbow and prepared for the walker when Grace stepped around the abandoned chimney. She gasped as the crossbow pointed to her face. "You almost died, hope your happy. Don't do it again." Daryl turned, sat and went back to shaving his arrows. Grace stood there silent watching him. "What do ya want?" Daryl stopped annoyed by her presence.
"Nothing." She stated as she took a couple of steps closer.
"Then go on wit yourself. Stand there staring at me like your a poster on a wall. Get outta here if you ain't got nothin to say," he pointed his arrow toward the camp.
"Why are you so mean?" Grace inquired.
"I don't ask you why you're so stupid so shut the hell up and go."
"Ummmhummm, well I don't think I will." Daryl stopped what he was doing and looked at her. She was a pretty girl in her thirties, kinda plain but her blonde hair and blue eyes were inviting.
"Are you deaf, I said go, I don't want you here. I moved out here to get away from all y'all." Shaking his head he went back to whittling his arrow.
"No, I guess I am just going to have to do this the hard way then."
"Do wh..." before Daryl could finish she stepped up and kissed him. He stood up. "What's wrong wit you! Did I say you could do that?"
"I don't remember asking Daryl. Besides until you learn to love I'm going to kiss you every day."
"The hell you will." But Grace turned and walked away a smile across her face. "Hey, I ain't done..." he yelled but Grace didn't say anything, gave a quick glance back and then continued on to the camp.
The next morning everyone was sitting around the campfire when Grace stepped out of her tent. Daryl was sitting in his chair by the fire eating eggs. He glanced at her as if to say I don't believe you. She took a deep breath and walked over to Daryl. "Now liste.." he started but before he could finish she leaned over and kissed him again. "What the... you best stop! I told you..." Grace smiled and turned around toward the breakfast table to get her food ignoring his threats. Everyone stopped eating and stared but Grace acted as if nothing had happened. Daryl, fed up with her, got up grabbed his chair and went back to his camp site to eat. Grace laughed to herself.
"Grace?" Carol questioned.
"Ummmmhum."
"What was that about?"
"Nothing," she turned and sat down eating her breakfast. The rest of the day Daryl avoided anything that had to do with Grace. If he saw her he turned and walked the other direction, looked away or ignored her all together. Grace didn't even notice and did her daily chores. This continued for three months. Daryl started getting used to her walking up to him but the group was astonished everyday. Group members were starting to question rather the two were dating but both denied the accusation.
"But the kissing..." Carol insisted, Grace would just laugh and walk away.
The next morning Grace walked out of her tent and Daryl was standing there waiting. "Let's get this over with." and he reached in to grab her by the waist. Realizing that Daryl was now interested she smiled.
"Nope, I'm not going to kiss you anymore," he grabbed her arm as she started to walk away.
"What do you mean not anymore? You said you were going to kiss me every day til I learned to love. I still hate most people."
Grace stood in front of him smiling. "Well, I wanted you to learn a lesson. I wanted you to understand what it feels like to the group when you say you aren't going to help anymore. See when the group asks you to help it's because they have learned to trust you and they depend on you, like you learned to trust that I was true to my word about kissing you everyday. Now how you felt when I said no, that's how the group feels when you say you are done with them and leave us. You see they trust you and need you and you..."
"Wait, this was about a lesson! You..." Grace shook her head yes.
"Well no, not just a lesson."
"Then what!" He demanded.
"You like me right?"
"I didn't say that." He snarled.
"Right. OK. Well I like to be pursued, I don't do the pursuing," Daryl stared at her.
"You're kiddin right!" He steamed.
"No." She pulled her arm from him and walked toward the breakfast table giving a small glance back. She could tell he was a little crushed and infuriated and she didn't like playing games, but she liked Daryl. The problem was his defenses were always up and he was unreachable otherwise. Her mother had always told her that if you love something to let it go and if it comes back then it's true. So she decided to let him go and see if he came back.
Two weeks had passed and Daryl hadn't said a word to her. Her heart was crushed. She had thought that she really made an impact on him but apparently her intentions were all for naught. One night the group had just finished having dinner at the farm house, everyone had left the kitchen except Grace who was washing the remaining pans when a set of arms wrapped around her waist. "What?" she gasped as the arms spun her around and she was face to face with Daryl Dixon. "Daryl, you scared me...what are you..." he stopped her mid sentence and kissed her. "Daryl I told you I wasn't going to kiss you anymore.." he placed his finger over her mouth to hush her.
"You ain't kissin me, I'm kissin you." he smiled as he retrieved a small white flower from behind her and gave it to her." She couldn't help but smile. "Here, let me help you wit the last of these dishes." The two silently finished the dishes every so often glancing at each other and laughing. Afterward they sat on the porch steps next to each other. Grace looked at him as he stared at the stars. Without even looking at her he reached over and took her hand. She smiled and placed her head on his shoulder. It was obvious to her that despite how hard he tried not to, Daryl Dixon loved her.
